Pokes in the Pros: Week 11

LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/21/23) – The Buffalo Bills went through some turmoil this past week. They fired offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey, amid the team’s struggles.

Josh Allen, working under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady, enjoyed one of his stronger games of the season in a 32-6 win over the New York Jets. He went 20-for-32 for 275 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Allen added 15 yards rushing on five carries, as the Bills improved to 6-5 on the season.

For the year, Allen is 266-for-382 for 2,875 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 picks. He also has 294 yards on 53 carries with seven scores.

Buffalo has a big game this week, traveling to Philadelphia on Sunday.

Allen isn’t the only former Poke making waves with his NFL franchise. Below is a list of the former University of Wyoming student-athletes and how they performed in Week 11.

Tashaun Gipson, San Francisco 49ers

Gipson carded a good game in the 49ers’ 27-14 victory over Tampa Bay. He had three tackles and one pass defended.

For the season, Gipson lays claim to 34 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and three passes defended for 7-3 San Francisco.

The 49ers travel to Seattle for Week 12.

Logan Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals

Wilson continues to stack strong game on top of strong game in the Bengals’ 34-20 loss at Baltimore. He boasted nine tackles and one quarterback hit.

For the season, Wilson has registered 79 tackles, four tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, three interceptions, six passes defended and three quarterback hits for 5-5 Cincinnati.

The Bengals host Pittsburgh in Week 11.

Andrew Wingard, Jacksonville Jaguars

Wingard had a decent day in the Jaguars’ 34-14 victory over Tennessee. He registered three tackles.

On the year, Wingard owns 26 tackles, two passes defended and an interception for 7-3 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars travel to Houston in Week 12.

Tyler Hall, Las Vegas Raiders

Hall enjoyed another strong day in the Raiders’ 20-13 loss at Miami. He recorded four tackles.

For the season, Hall owns 17 tackles for 5-6 Las Vegas.

The Raiders host Kansas City in Week 12.

Marcus Epps, Las Vegas Raiders

Epps had a mild game in the Raiders’ 20-13 loss at Miami. He made one tackle and had one fumble recovery.

For the season, Epps has 45 tackles, three tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one pass defended for 5-6 Las Vegas.

The Raiders host Kansas City in Week 12.

Mike Purcell, Denver Broncos

Purcell got back into the stat sheet in the Broncos’ 21-20 victory over Minnesota. He had one tackle.

On the year, Purcell lays claim to 12 tackles, four quarterback hits and two passes defended for 5-5 Denver.

The Broncos host the Browns in Week 12.

Chad Muma, Jacksonville Jaguars

Muma didn’t record a stat in the Jaguars’ 34-14 win over Tennessee. For the season, Muma has registered 15 tackles for 7-3 Jacksonville.

The Jaguars travel to Houston in Week 12.

Carl Granderson, New Orleans Saints

Granderson and the Saints were idle in Week 11. For the season, Granderson owns 43 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 14 quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for 5-5 New Orleans.

The Saints travel to Atlanta in Week 12.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 21, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys (7-4 overall, 4-3 MW) close out the regular season on Saturday with a trip to the Nevada Wolf Pack (2-9 Overall, 2-5 MW) on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. MT inside Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev.



The contest will be broadcasted on CBS Sports Network with John Sadak on the call joined in the booth by Randy Cross. The game will also be available on the 26 stations of The Cowboy Sports Network with Keith Kelley on the call, Kevin McKinney on color and Erick Pauley on the sidelines.



Cowboys Enjoy Another Successful Season in 2023: The 2023 season is another in a string of successful seasons for the Wyoming Cowboys. The Pokes enter this week’s final regular-season game of the season with a 7-4 record, with an opportunity for an eighth win if they can win on the road against the Nevada Wolf Pack this coming Saturday.

Among the accomplishments the Cowboys have enjoyed this season are:

•Winning at least seven games for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.

•Earning bowl eligibility for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.

•Posting a perfect 7-0 home record -- the first 7-0 home record in War Memorial Stadium history.

•Defeating two Top 25 ranked teams in then #24== ranked Texas Tech in the season opener and then #24 ranked Fresno State in the sixth week of the season.

•Capturing wins in rivalry series vs. Colorado State and Hawai’i to retain the “Bronze Boot” and “Paniolo Trophy,” respectively.

•Attracting a single-season record attendance of 162,144 fans.



Peasley Named to Manning Stats of the Week List: Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley was named to the Manning Award Stars of the Week list on Monday after having a career day on Saturday in Wyoming’s 42-9 win over Hawai’i on Saturday. Quarterback Andrew Peasley had a career day against Hawai’i. He threw for a career-high 319 yards in the game and tied a career-high with three touchdowns. He threw an 89-yard touchdown pass, which was the longest pass and touchdown pass of his career. The 89-yard touchdown was the longest touchdown pass since a 92-yard pass from Cam Coffman to Tanner Gentry against North Dakota on Sept. 5, 2015. He was 14-of-17 passing in the contest for 82 percent, which was also a career.



Offense Has Big Day: The Cowboys offense had a big day against Hawai’i. The offense recorded a season-high 472 yards of total offense. The offense was rolling in the first half scoring 35 points for the most since the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2021. The group had 361 yards of offense in the half for the most in a half since having 425 against Utah State in 2021.



Defense Holds Hawai’i Down: The Cowboy defense was solid against Hawai’i allowing only only nine points in the contest for a season low. It was the fewest allowed since allowing seven points to Hawai’i on Oct. 20, 2020. Wyoming had two interceptions in the contest and a goaline stop as well. The Rainbow Warriors rushed for only 67 yards for the fifth game allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards.



Marquez Has A Big Senior Day: Wide receiver Ryan Marquez had quite the senior day. He hauled in a 44-yard touchdown reception on the third play from scrimmage. It was his first career touchdown reception. He blocked a punt and recovered for a score against Tulsa last season for his first career score in the Brown and Gold.



Big Day for Tight End: Tight end John Michael Gyllenborg had a career day against the Rainbow Warriors. He had three catches for 128 yards on one touchdown. His touchdown was 89 yards for the longest since Tanner Gentry had a 92-yard score of a pass from Cam Coffman against North Dakota on Sept. 5, 2015. His 128 yards was the most in a game since Isaiah Neyor had 125 yards against Utah State in 2021. It was also the most yards by a tight end since Jacob Hollister had 144 against Boise State in 2016.



2023 Extends Series of Winning Seasons: The 2023 season marks the sixth time in the last eight seasons that Wyoming has posted a winning record. The last time that Cowboy Football had six winning seasons in an eight-year period was from 1993-2000.

2023 Season Sets All-Time Attendance Record: With a crowd of 18,233 in the final home game of the 2023 season, Wyoming fans shattered the previous single-season attendance record in War Memorial Stadium history. A total of 162,144 fans attended Wyoming’s seven home games in 2023. That broke the previous single-season attendance record of 149,625 set in 1990 for a seven-game season.

Hopefully not a dumb question, but what are the primary reasons for setting the record?

Didnt the Josh Allen days provide a higher ceiling?

mostly just asking out of curiosity. Was it as simple as the combo of great home play and good weather? from my perspective it’s been a good but certainly not a great season (I know some will disagree).

Didnt catch the entire Bills game but what I did watch seemed like the play calling was much improved and didnt ask Josh to throw bombs on third and long all game. I have heard several analysts suggest that Dorsey was too random and relied on Josh to make magic too often. Perhaps now they are setting things up better for a more efficient offense.

As I suspected, Ike is a terrible fit for how they play. He's turning in decent stat lines but it's coming at the expense of slowing their style of play way down.

Ike is not great in transition and he's not a pick and roll type of big. He can't stretch the floor with an outside shot and there is no risk of any pick and pop actions when he's on the court.

Ike played well defensively and will always be a good rebounder, but what a shame he turned out to be ****.

Gonzaga will not win their league this year.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 521 different quarterbacks from 133 schools have been recognized. CONWAY, S.C. (Nov. 19, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys hit 12 three pointers on their way to a 78-71 win over Furman on Sunday morning at the Myrtle Beach Invitational. The Pokes had four players in double-figures along with two players in Sam Girffin and Akuel Kot each added 20-plus points in the contest, as Wyoming moves to 4-1 on the season.



“The biggest thing is we’re really thankful to have the opportunity to come down here and play,” Uw head coach Jeff Linder said. “To be a part of an ESPN Event is a big deal for the program. To have the exposure on TV for our program, you can’t ask for anything better. The hospitality of the entire event, it was a first-class operation. Coming into this deal, we didn’t quite know what we had. Obviously, our schedule the way we had it set up, felt like we needed to try and gain some confidence early knowing we were coming in here with a pretty much brand new team. How would we respond?... You have to evolve. Akuel [Kot] and Sam [Griffin], those guys are really good players. Sam, he really likes this gym. I should have kept the ball in his hands the entire time. I think he’s scored, in four games in this gym, like 120 points. I knew those guys had the ability to score but for us to really become a good offensive team, we have to have the ability to share the ball.”



Griffin recorded a season-high 26 points going 11-of-19 from the field. He also added four assists in the contest. Kot scored 20 points along with four rebounds. He was named to the All-Tournament team and after six games over two seasons in the tournament is the all-time leading scorer. Forward Caden Powell added his first career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, which was a career best. Guard Brendan Wenzel recorded 13 points on 4-of-6 from behind the arc and six rebounds along with two assists.



Wyoming shot 47.5 percent from field and 48 percent from behind the arc. Wyoming was also 10-of-12 from the free throw line and went 45-of-54 for 83 percent for the tournament. Furman held a 36-33 advantage on the glass and shot 41.5 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from behind the arc. Wyoming recorded 18 assists on 28 made baskets.



The Pokes got out to a 7-0 lead thanks to five points Kot. The run was ended by a three pointer by Furman for a 7-3 game nearly four minutes into the contest. Griffin would get into the scoring with five points, as Wyoming would take a 12-3 lead at the 14:12 mark of the first frame.



The Paladins went on an 8-0 run to make it a 12-11 contest with 12 minutes left in the first half. Kot ended the run with a layup. Brendan Wenzel hit a pair of triples and Griffin added a bucket, as Wyoming went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-15 lead with under eight minutes left in the first stanza.



Furman responded with a 7-0 run, but it was halted by a Griffin three pointer for a 28-22 lead for the Pokes with under six minutes left in the first half. Wyoming went over two minutes without a score, but Caden Powell added a pair of free throws and got a huge offensive board and found Wenzel for a three-pointer as Wyoming would take a 37-28 lead into the half.



In the opening minutes of the second half, Wyoming went on an 8-0 run thanks to back-to-back threes from Griffin and Kot for a 45-31 lead two minutes into the half. Griffin made it an 11-0 run for a 48-31 lead that capped an 11-0 run.



Furman went on a 7-0 run to make it a 48-38 game, but Powell added an offensive board and layup for a 50-38 game with under 15 minutes left. The Paladins made it a seven-point game at 53-44 holding Wyoming scoreless for over two and half minutes.



Kobe Newton hit a triple off a pass from Powell for a 62-50 lead with under eight minutes left. The Paladins went on an 8-0 run to make it a 62-58, but a bucket by Powell made it a 64-58 contest with five minutes left. Kot made it a six-point game at 68-62 with four minutes left.



Powell got to his first career double-double with a layup for a 70-62 contest with 2:52 left in the clock. The Paladins kept fighting and made it a three-point game at 70-67 with :140 left. But Wenzel hit a triple for a six-point game and Powell made it a 75-67 game with over a minute left.



The Pokes would get it done at the line and finish the tournament 2-1 with the 78-71 victory.



The Paladins were led by JP Pegues with 22 points. Marcus Foster added 18 points in the game.



The Pokes will return to action a week from Sunday in a road contest at No. 19 Texas in a 1 p.m. MT start on the Longhorn Network.

He’s a big body that has the ability to create contact and get to the foul line. I thought Wenzel’s effort was tremendous.”

CONWAY, S.C. (Nov. 16, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys dominated the glass, but cold shooting and turnovers were too much to overcome in a 79-69 loss to Saint Louis in the opening round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational in the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.


“First of all, just proud of our guys’ effort coming into kind of like our first away game, even though it was a neutral game,” UW head coach Jeff Linder said. “Our team felt for the first time an experience playing a good A-10 team with a really good coach. We hadn't felt that yet. I knew there was gonna be a little bit of an adjustment to that. Obviously, we didn't handle the pressure like I thought we could have, even though if you go back and watch I don't think it was necessarily from anything that they did crazy. I think it was just a matter of us just getting a little bit sped up. That's going to happen early with such a new team. We'll learn from it. It's hard to win when you turn it over 19 times.”



Wyoming held a 46-33 advantage on the glass including 22 on the offensive glass. The 22 offensive rebounds were the most in a game since having 26 against Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 18, 2004.The Pokes recorded 19 turnovers in the contest. Wyoming was held to 35 percent from the floor and the Billikens shot 47 percent. Wyoming hit only three triples in the game with the Billikens scoring 24 points going 8-of-20 from behind the arc for 40 percent.



“The fact that we got 22 offensive rebounds, it gave us a chance to be in the game,” Linder said. “But it's hard to win when you just give it away 19 times and so we'll learn from it. We got to flush away pretty quick because we got a quick turnaround with College of Charleston.”



Forward Caden Powell recorded a career-high 17 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. He was 5-of-8 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Forward Cam Manyawu recorded his third-straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Griffin added 15 points with Akuel Kot adding 10 points. Guard Brendan Wenzel added six points and nine rebounds.



Griffin scored four-points early to give Wyoming a 6-4 lead in the opening three minutes of play. The Pokes held SLU scoreless for over five minutes and the Pokes went on a 10-0 run fueled by Griffin and Kojenets for a 14-4 advantage with under 14 minutes left in the first half.



Saint Louis would cut the Wyoming lead to three points at 18-15 with just over nine minutes left in the opening frame. SLU would later make three-straight baskets and make it a 23-20 opening 20 minutes of the contest. The Pokes held Saint Louis to no field goals over nearly three minutes and built a 27-22 advantage.



The Billikens took a 28-27 lead with under five minutes left in the first half. Sincere Parker added a triple to cap a 9-0 run for SLU for a 31-27 advantage. Kot would give Wyoming a 32-31 lead with a three-pointer with 85 seconds left in the first half. Powell recorded an and-one play that helped Wyoming take a 35-34 lead into the half.



Parker scored the first seven points for the Billikens in the opening minutes of the second half to give SLU a 41-40 lead. The Billikens would hold the Pokes scoreless for nearly four minutes with SLU taking a 44-40 lead. Wenzel added a pair of free throws for a 44-42 game with 15 minutes remaining.



Turnovers would haunt the Pokes and Saint Louis would take a 48-42 lead and would later push it to nine points at 51-42, as Wyoming went on a 0-of-10 stretch from the field. Griffin would add a three-pointer to cut the Wyoming deficit to six points at 53-47 with under 12 minutes left in the contest.



Wyoming went on a 5-0 run and made the Billiken lead three-points at 55-52. Powell paced the run with his third and-one play of the game. Saint Louis would push the lead back in their favor taking a nine-point lead making three straight shots for a 65-56 game with under seven minutes remaining.



Manyawu would get to the double-double and make it a 72-65 game with three minutes left. The Pokes would cut it to five points, but the Billikens pulled away and took the contest 79-69.



Saint Louis was led by Parker with 22 points and eight rebounds. Tim Dagler recorded 17 points and was 5-of-7 from the field.



The Cowboys will face off against College of Charleston tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. MT in a contest on ESPNU.

Hope everyone is watching this morning. Wyoming just played the most enjoyable half of basketball we've seen since 2022.

Caden Powell hits the glass like a damn freight train. When our guards are playing well we make a joke out of any junk zone thrown at us. Wenzel hit a few that really stressed the Furman defense.

This team is playing with great hustle, and the way our guards can play off the dribble make our offense so much more dynamic than the last couple years.

This is a fun team to watch. Four stars, would recommend.

(Nov. 18, 2023) -- An explosive first half by Wyoming’s offense and a smothering Cowboy defense fueled a 42-9 victory for the Wyoming Cowboys over Hawai’i in the final home game of the 2023 season. Wyoming scored five touchdowns on its first six possessions of the first half, while the Poke defense shutout the Rainbow Warriors in the first half to build a 35-0 halftime lead.



Wyoming’s five first-half scoring drives included numerous big plays as the Cowboys’ scoring drives consisted of 3 plays for 75 yards, 1 play for 89 yards, 6 plays for 69 yards, 4 plays for 66 yards and 3 plays for 39 yards.



The Pokes improved their record to 7-4 on the season and 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Hawai’i’s record now stands at 4-8 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain West.



Quotes From Head Coach Craig Bohl

Head coach Craig Bohl was asked after the game how special this day was for his team and for the seniors, who were playing in their final home game.



“It was really special and we’re really pleased with how we came out,” said Bohl. “It was going to be important for us to start fast, and we certainly did that. Our passing game was explosive, and we came up with some big plays on defense.



“Hawai’i is a prideful football team. We knew that they would fight, but the first half I think really secured this victory.”



Bohl was asked how excited he was for the play of quarterback Andrew Peasley in Saturday’s win. Bohl responded, “I certainly am (excited). He played gutty last week (at UNLV), but he was displeased with his performance in that game. He’s a winner, and I thought he played great today.”



Both the Cowboy offensive and defensive lines played key roles in Wyoming capturing Saturday’s victory, as well as the Pokes winning the turnover battle.



“It was going to be critical for us to win in those areas,” said Bohl. “The way that Hawai’i’s offense is structured, it was going to be important for us to establish our defensive line to make them one dimensional, and we were able to do that. We got some good push in the running game on offense today.”



Finally, Bohl was asked what it meant to his team to go undefeated at home and to see Wyoming fans set a new home attendance record.



“It means a lot -- credit our fans,” said Bohl. “I think we have a phenomenal home-game atmosphere, and particularly the students. That’s one of the things that is great about college football and one of the things that is great about the state of Wyoming.”



Cowboy Notes From Saturday

∙Wyoming completed a perfect 7-0 home record with Saturday’s win over Hawai’i. It is the first time in War Memorial Stadium history that the Cowboys won seven home games in a single season. It is the 15th undefeated regular-season home record in War Memorial history and the third in the Bohl era. The 2019 and 2016 Cowboy teams posted perfect 6-0 home records in the regular season.



∙Wyoming fans set a new War Memorial Stadium single-season attendance record this season. With a crowd of 18,233, the 2023 season attendance total finished at 162,144, breaking the previous record of 149, 625 set in a seven-game home season in 1990.

∙The 42 points scored by Wyoming were the most this season and the most that UW has scored since the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl when the Cowboys scored 52 points in a 52-38 win over Kent State. The Pokes previous high this season was 35 in a 35-33 double overtime win over then #24 Texas Tech and a 35-26 home win over New Mexico.



∙The Cowboy defense held Hawai’i to only 9 points, which is a season low allowed to an opponent. The previous season low for a UW opponent was 15 points by Colorado State in a 24-15 Wyoming win. The last time Wyoming held an opponent to under 10 points was the 2020 season, when UW held Hawai’i to 7 points in a 31-7 Wyoming home win.



∙The 33-point margin of victory (42-9) for Wyoming was its largest since Sept. 18, 2021, when the Pokes defeated Ball State by 33 points (45-12) in War Memorial Stadium.



∙Wyoming’s 472 yards of total offense was a season high. The previous high this season for the Cowboys was 433 total yards vs. New Mexico.



∙UW’s 319 passing yards were also the most for the Pokes this season. Wyoming had 212 passing yards at Air Force earlier this season for their previous best.



∙Cowboy quarterback Peasley played a near flawless game against Hawai’i, completing 14 of 17 passes (82.4 percent) for 319 yards and three touchdown passes. Both his 82.4 completion percentage and his 319 passing yards were career highs for Peasley during his Wyoming playing career. His previous career bests were an 78.3 completion percentage (18 of 23) against Air Force in 2022 and 256 passing yards vs. Tulsa in 2022.



∙Linebacker Easton Gibbs recorded another double-figure tackle game on Saturday, recording 11 tackles. It was Gibbs fifth double-digit tackle game this season and the 18th of his career. He has 101 tackles for the 2023 season. Gibbs now has 354 career tackles as a Cowboy. With his 11 tackles vs. Hawai’i, Gibbs moved into eighth place on the Wyoming career tackle list, passing former Cowboy linebacker greats Lucas Wacha (344 career tackles) and Ken Fantetti (352 career tackles).



∙Wyoming tight end John Michael Gyllenborg had a career day in terms of receiving yards on Saturday, catching three passes for 128 yards and one touchdown. His previous career best was 40 receiving yards vs. Air Force earlier this season. His 89-yard touchdown reception from Peasley was the longest for a Cowboy duo since quarterback Cam Coffman threw a 92-yard TD pass to wide receiver Tanner Gentry vs. North Dakota in the 2015 season.
