Basketball scrimmage

Surprised no one has posted yet. Good crowd at Storey Gym. Maldonado didn’t practice and Kyman didn’t play in the scrimmage.

What can you say about Ike; he’s a monster and is moving better than he did last year. Looks to be down 10 pounds. I thought Wenzel shot the ball well and is just the type of glue guy a good team needs. Also, I must give praise to Hunter Thompson. He looks much quicker, rebounded and shot the three ball from the wing on Ike’s side. That is going to be a matchup nightmare for teams.

Very impressed with Caden Powell. Real active and bouncy. He is going to be a good defender and rim protector. Noah looked bigger and is able to get to the basket with that left hand. JO also was JO - just does everything so smoothly. Anderson will be the key; strong presence with ball and can defend. He won’t score much but won’t have to. Max didn’t shoot the ball well from the outside but scored on the fast break with ease.

This team is so long and can get up the floor with JO, Max, Maldo, Dusell, and Anderson. Or will pound you down low with Ike or play the two-man game with Ike and Maldo.

I would say Linder’s primary rotation will be: Ike, Maldo, JO, Max, X, Anderson, Reynolds, Wenzel, and Thompson with a smattering of Foster and Powell. Wildcard is Kyman because he doesn’t practice a lot. Not sure if it is injury prevention or what.

Credit

Glad to give credit when credit is due. Overall this may have been the best game the Pokes have played on both sides of the ball. The offense was varied, the offensive line manhandled USU and Peasley burned them through the air. I give Polasek credit for changing things up because he had USU eating out of his hand. Great to see James light em’ up and Swen do his usual head banging. The defense was great and held an excellent running back in check as well as the young QB who could have spoiled our performance had he been able to escape the pocket. The defense was relentless!

Having a QB that never gets too up or down and throws a nice ball opens everything up. The tight ends were active and we exploited the middle of the field which should delight many of us. At the beginning of the season Bohl was right when he said we’ll have several new faces worth talking about as the season progresses. This team is young and hungry and it looks like Bohl is allowing Polasek to call his game more than he let Vigen. Bohl‘s off season epiphany has contributed to these pups performance. Absolutely no question about it that we have talent on both sides of the ball. Now just beat Hawaii and CSU into submission and set the table for a packed house when Boise State comes to town.

How many MW teams will get bowl eligible?

*AF has 5 wins- plays Army, NM, Sheep, SDSU- a lock to get to 6 probably 8
*Boise has 5 wins- plays Sheep, BYU, Nev, UW, Utah St- a lock to get to 6, at least 8.
*Sheep- has 2 wins- plays Boise, San Jose, UW, AF, NM. Can't see any way to 6.
*Fresno- has 3 wins- plays SDSU, Hawaii, UNLV, NV and UW. Should beat NV and Hawaii. Tough games for the other 3. Which Fresno team shows up- the one who lost to UConn or beat San Jose. Toss-up
*Hawaii- has 2 wins- plays UW, Fresno, Utah St, UNLV, SJSU. Can't see 4 wins there
*Nevada- has 2 wins- plays SJSU, Boise, Fresno, UNLV. No way they go 4-0
*NM- has 2 wins- plays Utah St, AF, SDSU, Sheep. No way they go 4-0
*SDSU- has 4 wins- plays Fresno, UNLV, SJSU, NM, AF. NM is only gimme. Probably squeezes at least 1 more W.
*SJSU- has 4 wins but lost a good chance for a 5th when NM St game was postponed- plays Nev, Sheep, SDSU, USU, Hawaii. I think fairly good they get to 6.
*UNLV- has 4 wins- plays SDSU, Fresno, Hawaii, Nevada. Decent chance to get 6. Probably has to win the last 2 to get there
*Utah St- has 3 wins- plays NM, Hawaii, SJSU and Boise. 2 wins probable but tough to see 3
*UW- has 5 wins- plays Hawaii, Sheep, Boise, Fresno. Should get at least 2 if not more.
I see AF, Boise, UW, SJSU as locks to get to 6. Fresno, SDSU and UNLV will have a tougher road with Aztecs having the best chance.
