Buckle up everyone, basketball is here…..

I hope Wyoming fans take a moment to really appreciate the moment on this beginning of the 2022-23 basketball season. I hope fans are onboard from day one ready to bring it in the AA. This is not the time to “wait and see”.

Not to get too sentimental but this season could, and I emphasize could, be a “last ride” of sorts. We have a team that is peaking, with a hot commodity coach. In almost every game this season we are going to be the big dogs with the target on our back. The injury to Graham is an unfortunate setback but we have built a team that I believe can overcome his absence.

These kinds of season don’t come along often at Wyoming. A legit revenue sport team with well founded ambitions of deep postseason potential, returning essentially the entire roster. History tells us this happens maybe once a generation. With the way collegiate athletics are trending I have my doubts about how many more times such a thing can be replicated at Wyoming, hence the last ride comment.

Buckle up everyone.

About The Teams

The Cowboys were picked to finish second in the Mountain West in the Preseason Poll released in October. The poll marked the first time the Cowboys have ranked in the top two of the Preseason Poll since the 2002-03 and 2001-02 seasons. Wyoming recorded 24 wins during the regular season in 2021-22 for the most in a regular season since the Pokes recorded 24 during the 1951-52 campaign. Along with 85 percent of the scoring returning, the Cowboys return 84 percent of the rebounding from last season. Wyoming led the conference in defensive rebounds per game last season at 27.4 per game.

Offensively, the Pokes were one of the MW’s teams getting to the free throw line leading the conference with 669 attempts and 485 makes. The Cowboys also led the conference with 275 made three-pointers, which ranked fourth in single-season school history.

The Cougars finished last season with an 8-20 overall record and went 5-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference under third year head coach Liam Simmons. Colorado Christian was picked to finish 13th in the Preseason RMAC poll.

Ike was also named the MW Preseason Player of the Year but will miss an extended period of time with an injury. In all, Wyoming returns four starters and eight letterwinners to go along with two redshirts. The Cowboys welcomed five new players including a trio of transfers and two freshmen.

Wyoming Bowl Eligibility Since 1980

I used today's bowl eligibility criteria to see how the Cowboys previous teams would had fared going back to 1977 with bowl eligibility. In brackets, I put the bowl the Cowboys attended in the specific season when they made a bowl.

1993-1999: The Cowboys were bowl eligible 7 seasons in a row. Two bowl appearances. No wins. (Tiller, Dimel tenures).

2016-2022: The Pokes have been bowl eligible 6 seasons in a row minus the shutdown season. (Bohl Tenure)
1987-1990: Paul Roach made 3 bowls in 4 seasons with 2 marquee appearances in the Holiday Bowl

From 1985-1999: The Cowboys were bowl eligible 11-out-of-15 seasons. Participating in 4 bowls during the stretch. Winning none.

During the Glenn/Christensen/Koenning: Bowl eligible 4 times in 14 years. Winning 2 bowl games.

Glenn/Christensen produced 4 bowl eligible years out of 11 seasons.

Cowboys have won two outright Championships (Roach), two division titles (Tiller, Bohl), one 3-way Co-Championship (Tiller 1993), and were bowl eligible 25 times out of 45 seasons (56% of the time) and making 12 bowl games during the period from 1977-2022. Bohl's tenure has a 75% bowl eligibility clip.

Josh gets a new toy.

Today the Bills quietly traded an under achieving running back in Zach Moss and a 6th rounder for Nyheim Hines. If you watched the Colts over the last few seasons, you would know that Hines is a speedy pass catcher and should be a great relief valve for Josh. I would say the Bills are all in, obviously. Super Bowl champs or bust, baby.
