First Spring Practice See Cowboys Drill for Two Hours on Tuesday

Quotes From Craig Bohl University of Wyoming Head Football Coach

Regarding Wyoming’s First Spring Practice

“We got Practice 1 in the books. It wouldn’t be spring in Wyoming without some snow,” said Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl. “I was really pleased with how our players responded today. We had eight great weeks of off-season conditioning. Our overall times are better, we’re leaner, we’re bigger and to the naked eye it certainly showed up I thought today.

“It was an encouraging practice. Two players didn’t finish. TJ Urban (a safety) may have a pretty significant knee injury. We’ll find out a little bit more about that tomorrow. Tyrese Grant (a wide receiver) had a thigh bruise. I don’t think it’s significant enough that he’ll be missing much practice, but sometimes those guys do have some swelling.

“We worked in a lot of quarterbacks today. It was fun for me to watch those guys and see them go out and compete.

“I’m really pleased with the team’s attitude. There is a lot on the horizon for them.

“Spring is always a time where you get to work with every member of the football team and there really is a blank slate to begin the spring. It will be fun to see this group compete and see how far we can go this year.”

When Asked About His First Impressions of the New Quarterbacks in the Program (Andrew Peasley and Evan Svoboda)

“We’re all happy with them, but it is a whole different system for both of them, managing a pro-style offense, being under center and play calls that are long,” said Bohl. “All those things are different for them, but I thought they did well today for the first day. We had good competition today, but that is going to be a long process as we go along.”

Regarding Wyoming’s NFL Pro Day on Tuesday and Specifically What He Saw From Former Cowboy Defensive End Garrett Crall, Who Was One of the Players Who Participated in Pro Day

“That (developing players) is somewhat what we do here and kudos to our strength and conditioning staff. They’ve done a great job,” said Bohl. “Garrett (Crall) had an excellent day. I talked with a lot of (NFL) guys today who I’ve known for a long time. His scores were impressive and that was not by chance. Garrett was a team player when he came in and did whatever it took for our football team. He developed and had a good day today. I think his stock moved up the ladder certainly.”

Regarding the Importance of Current Wyoming Linebacker Easton Gibbs and Whether He Will Be Moving From Weak-side to Middle Linebacker This Coming Season

“We did move him to MIKE (middle linebacker). I asked him after one session how it went, and he said it was a little different but he got more used to it in the second session of practice,” said Bohl. “That transition has occurred through the years, whether it was Logan (Wilson) ,then it was Chad (Muma) and now the next guy is going to be Easton. He recognizes that there is a lot that goes on at that position and a lot of responsibility, but we feel that he is well capable.”

The Cowboys will return to practice on Thursday afternoon for the second of 15 spring practices leading up to the Spring Game on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. in War Memorial Stadium.

An Eventful Day for Wyoming Cowboy Football,

Day Began with 2022 NFL Pro Day and Ended With First Spring Practice

Pro Day Attracted 29 of 32 NFL Teams

Laramie, Wyo. (March 29, 2022) -- It was an eventful day for University of Wyoming Football on Tuesday. In the morning, Cowboy Football held its annual NFL Pro Day for draft-eligible players, and in the afternoon the Pokes held their first spring practice of 2022.

A total of 29 NFL teams were in attendance at Wyoming’s NFL Pro Day on Tuesday. It was evident by the number of teams in attendance that the interest in former Wyoming Cowboys continues to run high among NFL teams. The teams in attendance included: ARIZONA CARDINALS, ATLANTA FALCONS, BALTIMORE RAVENS, BUFFALO BILLS, CAROLINA PANTHERS, CHICAGO BEARS, CINCINNATI BENGALS, CLEVELAND BROWNS, DALLAS COWBOYS, DENVER BRONCOS, DETROIT LIONS, GREEN BAY PACKERS, HOUSTON TEXANS, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, MIAMI DOLPHINS, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, NEW YORK GIANTS, NEW YORK JETS, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, TENNESSEE TITANS and WASHINGTON COMMANDERS. The only three teams who didn’t participate were the LOS ANGELES , RAMS, MINNESOTA VIKINGS and PITTSBURGH STEELERS.

Seven Cowboys were scheduled to participate on Tuesday, including: Garrett Crall (defensive end), Keegan Cryder (center), Ayden Eberhardt (wide receiver), Esaias Gandy (safety), Logan Harris (offensive guard), Chad Muma (linebacker) and Trey Smith (running back). Cryder was unable to participate in testing due to a muscle pull, and Eberhardt was limited in testing as he continues recovery from a knee injury suffered during the 2021 season.

Former Wyoming linebacker Muma also participated in only a limited number of agility and position drills during the testing since he had previously participated in the 2022 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., the first week of March.C

While NFL teams don’t release official numbers following Pro Days, some of the unofficial testing results that were recorded on Tuesday would have placed several Cowboys among the top at their positions based on results from this year’s NFL Combine posted on NFL.com.

While Muma did not participate in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical or long jump on Tuesday, he did take part in the 20-yard shuttle and the 3-Cone Test and unofficially recorded better times than he did at he NFL Combine. In the 20-yard shuttle, he was reported to have recorded a 4.25 time on Tuesday. At the NFL Combine, he was recorded at 4.28, which was the second best among all linebackers tested at the Combine. His 4.25 on Tuesday, would have tied him for the best time at the Combine. In the three-cone drill, Muma was timed at 6.91 on Tuesday. That would have tied him for the fastest time recorded by a linebacker at this year’s NFL Combine. Muma had previously posted a 7.06 at the Combine, which ranked him fourth.

In the bench press, UW offensive lineman Harris bench pressed 225 pounds 25 times. Based on results from this year’s NFL Combine, Harris’ 25 reps would have ranked him No. 8 among all offensive linemen tested at the Combine. UW running back Smith benched 225 pounds 20 times, which would have ranked him No. 5 among running backs tested at the NFL Combine. Safety Gandy benched 225 pounds 16 times, which would have tied him for the sixth best performance among safeties at the Combine, and Crall’s 16 reps would have placed him 10th among defensive ends/edge rushers tested at the Combine.

Crall also ran an unofficial 4.70, 40-yard dash on Tuesday. Based on results from this year’s NFL Combine, Crall’s time would have tied him for 10th place among defensive ends/edge rushers that were tested at the Combine.

In the vertical jump, Cowboy safety Gandy had the best vertical jump of the day of 33’ 0”. That would have placed him 15th among safeties tested at the NFL Combine. Crall’s jump of 31’ 6” would have ranked him 18th among defensive ends/edge rushers at the Combine.

Gandy also had the longest standing long jump of the day, jumping 10’ 1”, which would have tied him for 15th among safeties tested at the Combine. Crall had the second best long jump of the day among Cowboys. His jump of 9’ 11” would have placed him 15th among defensive ends/edge rushers tested at the NFL Combine.

Gandy’s time of 4.46 in the 20-yard shuttle would have tied him for sixth at the Combine among safeties.

The testing, which was open to the public, saw Wyoming’s draft-eligible players tested by NFL scouts in a series of drills, including: the 225 bench press, Vertical Jump, the 40-yard dash, Broad jump, 3-Cone Test, 20-yard shuttle and Specific Position Testing.

The 2022 NFL Draft will be held Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30 in Las Vegas, Nev.

A total of 16 former Wyoming Cowboys were on NFL rosters at the conclusion of the 2021 NFL season -- some on active rosters and others on developmental squads. That was more than any other Mountain West Conference school.

Those Cowboys and their NFL teams at the end of last season were: Josh Allen (quarterback, Buffalo Bills), Marcus Epps (safety, Philadelphia Eagles), Austin Fort (tight end, Tennessee Titans), Rico Gafford (wide receiver, Denver Broncos), Tanner Gentry (wide receiver, Buffalo Bills), Tashaun Gipson (safety, Chicago Bears), Carl Granderson (defensive end, New Orleans Saints), Tyler Hall (cornerback, Los Angeles Rams), Brian Hill (running back, San Francisco 49ers), Jacob Hollister (tight end, Jacksonville Jaguars), Mark Nzeocha (linebacker, San Francisco 49ers), Mike Purcell (nose tackle, Denver Broncos), Chase Roullier (center, Washington Commanders), Logan Wilson (linebacker, Cincinnati Bengals), Andrew Wingard (safety, Jacksonville Jaguars) and Eddie Yarbrough (defensive end, Minnesota Vikings). Since the end of the 2021 season, Gafford moved to the Green Bay Packers and Hollister moved to the Las Vegas Raiders.
